You pan the torch around the room - it picks out walls covered with shelves, crammed full with books. You see a desk. There is an open book lying right in the centre of the desk.
You scan the open pages which tell the story of the first English settlers who arrived in Virginia and created the province of Jamestown in the early part of the 17th Century. The pages refer to one eminent settler in particular, George Hampton l, a very wealthy landowner who established the largest tobacco plantation in Virginia. By his Will, he arranged for the plantation to be inherited by the eldest son through the line of his descendants. In the year 1801 George Hampton Vlll inherited the estate. He had no sons but a daughter, born to him in 1810. A great fire broke out at the site in 1832, which took the life of George Hampton Vlll. It was not clear what became of his daughter, who did not always reside on the grounds and whose whereabouts was unknown at the time of the fire.
Pushing the book to one side, concealed underneath it you find a piece of paper. On it there is handwriting which looks familiar to you.
Thinking to yourself, you ask who 'The Gnat' is. His writing looks the same as that which appears in the diary.
It is time to make a choice: either leave the house or go to the cellar, where you might pick up fresh clues since you were last in the house or you can recap on previous clues which are hazy in your memory.
