Traveller's Tales
I encountered Jamaica in the autumn of 1991 and stayed at the resort known as Ocho Rios. The first thing I noticed about Jamaica (apart from how lush it is) is that it is full of so much music - it oozes out of every place on the island. It hits you as soon as you arrive at the airport - a steel band greeted me and the other passengers.
The waters are crystal clear and there are exotic fruits and flowers everywhere. However, even though this appears to be an island of plenty as far as natural richness is concerned, the only wealthy people here are the tourists and presumably the fat cats who own the hotels - therefore don't stray from the beaten path and make sure you leave all valuables in your hotel room whenever possible. In spite of the fact that the wealth is concentrated on relatively few people, the Jamaicans generally seem contented and extremely laid back. The reggae beat is very much part of the people - Bob Marley's spirit lives on.
There are 2 drinks which you must try when in Jamaica - the rum punch and the Blue Mountain coffee. Go up to the mountains to get the authentic coffee, where it is still prepared in the traditional way.
If you get the chance, make sure you climb the Dunn's River Falls - OK it is what all the tourists do, but it's great fun. Speaking of fun, taking a trip on The Jolly Roger is also a sure way of enjoying yourself, as long as you haven't had too many rum punches or too much Red Stripe lager the night before. You'll be required to take part in the activities on board - walking the plank or limbo dancing (head gear optional).
