Traveller's Tales
As you can see, I left Malta on 10th July 1989, after a 2 week stay in the resort called St. Julian's Bay (see photo below).
Malta was hot, and the local lads thought they were too, as they strutted down the street to the Bee Gees' "Staylin' Alive" (which could be heard blaring out of most bars every evening), blinding everybody with their gleaming gold medallions. If the lads had also been wearing white suits, I would have thought that this island was totally populated by John Travolta wannabes... although it looks as if this one prefers to be in the spotlight as Michael Jackson.
However, once I had ventured into the local nightclubs, I discovered that not all Maltese people were stuck in a Bee Gees' time warp: Soul II Soul's "Back to Life" and Madonna's "Vogue" dominated the dance floor. Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" was also popular.
If you are going to travel around Malta, do so in style - look up Dobbin for all your transport needs.
If it's sun and sand you're after, then Mellieha Bay or Golden Bay (pictured below) is where you'll find it.
Generally speaking, Maltese people are religious. If you visit any of the many churches on the island you will see rich artistic treasures.
Also see if you can catch a "Fest" which is a religious celebration which spills out on to the streets - there are fireworks, bands and local delicacies available. Tourists are welcome but make sure you respect the silence and dress protocols if you go inside any of the churches.
Well, that was a whistle stop tour of Malta. Hope you enjoyed it.
